OK
- yes - it has been done before. Nike and a couple others have used
element looking elements (er, is that good English?) in their designs
for a couple of years. But I don't think anyone has taken it in
quite this direction. To be honest, I don't know if anyone previous
has directly influenced this design, or if I just picked it up subconsciously.
It could possibly relate all the way back to high school, when I
thought my life would be better as a chemical engineer. (Between
you and me, I think I made the better career decision)
Regardless of what nether region this idea came from, it has been
kicking around in my head for some time. It has taken me way to
long to get it to an actually digital entity. But here it is. Yes
sir.
I call it "lo_tek/elemental" for rather obvious
reasons. This page is low tech. Well, in the grand scheme of this
Flash saturated world. Don't get me wrong, I like Flash, but I don't
NEED Flash. I don't have to distract viewers with spinning gears
and flying text. I can try to keep them here with sound design and
content (well, hopefully). I do use some Java Script, but it isn't
cutting edge, nor fancy. Heck, its down right ghetto. I do employ
style sheets, but that's about as fancy as I get. The rest are tables,
.gif, and text. I pull a few tricks I know, but over all its pretty
simple. And, in case you haven't figured it out, elemental refers
to the chart of elements on the main page and the recurring theme
through the navigation.
As
you can see I use primarily color safe colors, with #FF9900 being
this lovely orange. I used to hate orange, I wonder why. The fonts
I use are Flotsam Smart and Flotsam Stiff Upper for the main heading
text. OCR-A for the quotes and some secondary text. And I use Verdana,
with a sprinkle of Arial, for the HTML text.
What else would you like to know? If there is something you would
like to know about the design, email
me and I will answer and post it here.
